BEACH, Robert E.
Robert E. Beach of West Hartford died peacefully on Sunday, (December 21, 2003) at Hartford Hospital. Born September 12, 1911, in New Britain, son of Clarence and Marion (McNary) Beach, he moved at an early age to Bristol. He was a graduate of the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and the Yale Law School. He practiced law in Hartford as associate and partner in the firm of Shipman and Goodwin. In 1942, he joined United Aircraft Corporation (now United Technologies Corporation) where he established its law department. He served as vice president, corporation counsel and member of the operating and policy committee before retiring in 1974. Mr. Beach was a director of the Superior Electric Company of Bristol, until retiring in 1980 as chairman of its executive committee. He had served as president and chairman of the National Security Industrial Association, Washington, D.C. He was a founder and served as chairman of the Council of Defense and Space Industries, Washington, D.C. He chaired several committees of the Aerospace Industries Association and was active in committee work of the National Association of Manufacturers. He had served as vice president and trustee of the Manchester Memorial Hospital and as a member of the Manchester Redevelopment Commission, and moderator and chairman of the Prudential Committee of Center Congregational Church, Manchester. Mr. Beach was a member of the Ivy League and University of Pennsylvania Alumni Clubs of Sarasota, FL. He was predeceased by his wife, the former Dorothy Case. His children, step-children and their spouses include Mary Anne Chew and Frank Chew of Atlanta, GA, Margaret Bye of Santa Ana, CA, Hon. Robert E. Beach, Jr. and Susan Beach of Glastonbury, Charles E. Jacobson, Ill, and Donis Jacobson of Lakeland, FL, Dr. Wells C. Jacobson and Margaret Jacobson of Manchester, and Dorothy Jacobson of Wilmington, DE. Grandchildren and spouses include Dr. Adrienne P. Chew of Seattle, WA, Nicholas Chew of Portland, OR, Michael Bye and Dr. Berenice Perez Bye of Oakland, CA, Andrew Bye of Santa Ana, CA, Margaret, Cheyenne and Hannah Beach of Glastonbury, Charles E. Jacobson, IV, of Gainesville, FL, Mark Jacobson of Orlando, FL, and Casey, Ellen and Melanie Jacobson of Manchester. He had a great grandchild, Elisa Bye of Oakland, CA. Donations, in lieu of flowers, may be made to the Lawrence Wells Case and Florence Reid Case Memorial Fund (for the public use and preservation of Case Mountain), c/o the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving, 85 Gillette Street, Hartford, CT 06015, or to the charity of the donor's choice. Burial will be private; a memorial gathering will be announced at a later time.
