South County Mourns Edna Overacker
Fremont-Southern Alameda County, where she lived for more than 60 years, contributing to its education, civic life and history, today mourns Mrs. Edna Sophia Overacker, 87.
Mrs. Overacker, widow of Charles B. Overacker, died Friday night in a local hospital where she had been a patient since she broke her hip in a fall Christmas Day.
Her home since 1900 had been on the remaining 30 acres of the original 200-acre ranch purchased in 1882 by her late husband’s family. Her address was 39051 Overacker Ave. in the Niles district, a street named for the pioneers.
Former principal
A former educator, she had been principal of Mt. Eden School for nearly 20 years. She also served as trustee of the Niles School. For nine years she was on the Alameda County Board of Education.
She was one of seven persons appointed to serve on the county’s Board of Public Welfare, whose report in 1917 resulted in establishment of the County Welfare Department.
Edna Sophia Hammer was born in Salt Llake City, Utah. She was brought by her parents to Oakland, where she attended school. She started teaching in Pleasanton in 1894. She was teaching in Niles when she and Overacker were married in 1900.
Historian
She was historian of the Country Club of Washington Township, founded in 1896, and for the Niles Congregational Church. She was a member of the Fremont League of Women Voters, the Fremont Committee for Representative Government, toyon Branch of the Children’s Hospital of the East Bay and former secretary of the Washington Township Historical Society.
Survivors are a son, Air Force Col.____ Charles B. Overacker of Tiburton and a daughter, Mrs. Carol Svoboda of Fremont.
Private family services will be held at Truman’s funeral home in Oakland Tuesday.
