LATHAM -- Robert E. 'Obie' Overocker, Sr., 79, of Creekside Lane, and a former longtime resident of Mechanicville, died Tuesday at St. Mary's Hospital, Troy, after a brief illness. Born in Troy, August 22, 1922, son of the late Urias and Lesa VanBuren Overocker, he was a 1940 graduate of Mechanicville High School. A railroad engineer for most of his life, he ran trains for the Boston and Maine Railroad in Mechanicville for over 45 years, retiring in 1991. During World War II, Mr. Overocker served with the U.S. Army Infantry in the European Theater of Operations. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers, former member of the J.L. Short Hook and Ladder Co. of the Mechanicville Fire Department. A sportsman, Obie enjoyed fishing and hunting years ago, and also enjoyed cruising about the Capital District in his automobile. Survivors include two sons, H. Britt Overocker of Latham, Robert (Meg) E. Overocker, Jr. of Mechanicville; five grandchildren, Matthew, Ryan, Shaina and Whitney Overocker and Jennifer Duncan; along with sisters, Lillian Hubbell and Betty Gartner, both of Mechanicville, also nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife of 43 years, Andrea Bartlett Overocker, who died in 1993; a son, Robert M. Overocker; brother, John and sister, Ida Morby. A funeral service will be conducted 8 p.m., Friday evening at the DeVito-Salvadore Funeral Home, 39 S. Main St., Mechanicville. Burial in Hudson View Cemetery, Mechanicville on Friday, April 12th at 1 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to CEMSBA (Colonie Emergency Services Benevolent Assoc.), 312 Wolf Rd., Latham, NY 12110.
