South Dakota became a state in 1889, so I'm puzzled as to how a marriage certificate would have said South Dakota before that. Could the "marriage certificate" not be an original record? In either 1883 or 1888, it should say Dakota Territory.
There is a state census of 1885 at the SD State Historical Library in Pierre. If your family was on the portion of that census that still exists, you might find Emma NORRIS instead of Emma McNARY to prove that the marriage was not in 1883. What is the source of the 1883 date of marriage?
SD Births (online) has John Wesley McNARY, b. 26 Aug. 1899, Hanson County, s/o John Cornelius McNARY & Emma NORRIS.
There are land patents for John McNARY, Homestead & Timber Culture, Hanson Co., Twp. 102 - 59 [Rosedale Township], Section 3 NW (& north half of 3 SW). That land was later owned by Duane BUTTS [Centennial Atlas, 1989]. George McNARY patented Section 3 NE. In 1880, both were of Twp. 102, Hanson Co. George, 22, WI, was alone. John, 21, WI, was in the household of John M. BLAIN.
In 1930, Hanson Co., SD, these were the McNARY individuals on the database of the census, with approximate year of birth. Families are not divided on this database.

I don't know where the BUTTS families were in 1930. They were either missed or indexed under some other name.
Duane W. BUTTS (30 May 1917 - 5 Jan. 1995) is buried in Greenhill Cem., Alexandria. Cemetery index indicates he was husband of Nina SANDERSON. We [Mitchell Area Genealogical Society] don't have any McNARY or NORRIS indexed as Hanson County burials.

My father was Duane Wesley Butts, son of "Addie" or Emiline McNary Butts. In going through all the family documents, we found a marriage certificate of John McNary and Emma Norris. It's very old but the date of marriage states November 12th of 1888 rather than 1883. "South Dakotaa is crossed out and "Territory "is written in.
