4 Die as Plane Crashes, Burns
Sutter (Sutter County), Nov 24.-Four Southern Californians died yesterday when their private plane crashed and exploded in the Sutter Butte area.
The party was en route home from a duck and pheasant hunting trip.
Killed in the flaming crash, according to Sutter County Sheriff George W. Carpenter, were:
Austin Collier, 34, the pilot, a lieutenant in the Culver City Police Department; Russell Riner, 37, owner of an electrical company in Culver City; Harvey Sigsbey of Los Angeles, and F. William Wood, 37, employee of the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power.
The four men, who had been hunting with Chief of Police James Evans of Chico, left Chico shortly after noon, filing a flight pland for Culver City.
It was about a half hour later that Marcus Dewitt, a rancher, heard an explosion and looked out his back door to see a “geyser” of wreckage shooting up from a small ravine.
A small grass fie was touched off by the crash.
