Notes for James Albert SIGSBEE

The exact name of the father of James Albert Sigsbee has not been documented. His place of birth found on the 1900 census for Earlington, Hopkins Co., KY was listed as Spain. Likewise, the name of James Albert Sigsbee's grandfather has not been documented. Effie Sigsbee Harbaugh apparently felt that his name was Charles, but failed to document how she arrived at that conclusion. The following first paragraph is the family group as compiled by Effie Sigsbee Harbaugh.

The spelling of Albert‘s surname in the Evansville, Indiana Directories 1888-1892, his marriage in 1896 , and the marriage of his mother in 1881 to Edward L. Smith, indicates that this family’s surname was commonly found spelled Sisbie or Sigsbie until the time of the 1900 census while in Kentucky on which it was spelled Sigsbee. On the marriage record of Albert’s widow to Andrew Mitchell in 1907, Mary Myrtle’s name was found spelled Sigsby. On the 1910 census after Albert’s widow was again widowed, Albert’s children’s surname was found spelled Sigsbee. The progression of the name found originally as Sisbie or Sigsbie to Sigsbee, is not uncommon with many of the turn of the century families with similarly spelled surnames.

James Albert's place of birth listed in the 1880 census and on his marriage record is given as Kentucky
