MARTIN A. SMITH
Martin A. Smith of Guilderland Center, a truck driver for the Albany County Highway department, died of a heart attack Wednesday, March 12, while working on a road near Dunnsville. He would have been 51 years old on March 18th.
Born in Schenectady March 18th, 1901 Mr. Smith moved to the town of Guilderland with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lester Smith, in 1906. He was a truck driver for the Highway department for ten years.
Mr. Smith had been an active member of the Guilderland Center Fire department for 29 years, and was assistant chief for two years. He was presented with a 25-year gold pin in 1948, and was made a life member of the department in 1951. He was known for his devotion to duty as a volunteer fireman.
The Fire department held services las Friday night at the Fredendall Funeral Home, what a large number attending paid their respects to a faithful member. At the funeral on Saturday, the following brother firemen acted as bearers, Clyde Sholtes, Harold Arnold, Arva Frederick, Arnold Crounse, Berton Carman and Gustave Ferbert.
Mr. Smith was married to Nora Gray of Fort Ann, NY on Dec 25, 1921. Mrs. Smith died Sept 29, 1951. He is survived by a daughter, MRs. Charles Miltner of Schenectady; five grandchildren, Martin Andrew, Charles Claude, Carol Ann, Linda Rose, and Terry Alan Miltner; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lester Smith, two sisters, Mrs. Gilbert Fontaine and Mrs. Anna Ogsbury, all of Guilderland Center; also one brother, Donald J. Smith of Albany.
Funeral services were held at the Fredendall Funeral Home, Altamont, Saturday afternoon. Burial was at Prospect Hill cemetery.
