Actual marriage license:
Marriage Bond, The commonwealth of Kentucky
"Be it known that we, E.L. Smith as principal, and J.O.A or H Smith as surety are jointly and severally bound to the Commonwealth of Kentucky in the sum of One Hundred Dollars. The Condition of this Bond is as follows:
That, whereas Marriage is intended to be solemnized between the above bound E.L. Smith and Miss Martha Sisbie. Now, if there is no lawful cause to obstruct said Marriage, this Bond shall be void, otherwise it shall remain in full force and effect. Dated at Russellville, Logan County this 12th day of Nov 1881." On a separate piece of paper attached to the Bond papers, a note from Martha: "To the county clerk of Logan County
Sir: I am willing for you to grant E.L. Smith license to mary me Martha SisBie"
They were married at the Methodist Church parsonage at Russellville, Logan Co., KY by R.F. Hayes, on November 15, 1881. Witnesses: Mrs. Lucy Bell, Miss Lucy Bell and Mrs. R.F. Hayes.
On the marriage license was attached a note written and signed by Martha, on which she spelled her name Sisbie. She didn't provide any further information and the implication was that she was unmarried and Sisbie was her maiden name. It is evident that the clerk assumed that this was her first marriage.
At the time of her marriage to Edward Lee Smith, her son James Albert was about 8 years old and her daughter, presumably the daughter of Edward Lee Smith, was about 3 years old.
