Collector Dies After Seven
Months’ Illness

Redwood, Nov. 20. -- Charles A. Overacker, 80, died at 9 Friday night at his home in this village, after an illness of seven months.

Funeral services will be held Monday afternoon at 1:30 from the home and at 2 from the Lutheran church, Redwood, with Rev. William VonDeben, officiating.

Mr. Overacker was born in the town of Alexanderia, May 27, 1869, son of the late John and Sarah Jane Peck Overacker. He married Miss Elizabeth Hofferberth on March 13, 1893.

Surviving him, besides his wife, are one daughter, Miss Geneva M. Overacker, at home, a teacher in the Alexandria Bay Central school; two sisters, Mrs. William Avery, Alexandria Bay and Mrs. George Marklie, Redwood; and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Overacker attended school in the town of Alexandria and for 23 years, owned and operated the Cold Sprikng Cheese factory. He moved to Redwood in 1906 and operated a hardware store for five years. He later entered partnership with the late Charles Curtis in the feed business, under the name of Curtis and Overacker.

Seventeen years ago, Mr. Overacker opened a general mercantile business, which he operated in this village until three years ago when he sold out to Otto Felder.

Mr. Overacker has been active in civic affairs of the community and some years ago, was town clerk and tax collector for the town of Alexandria. He served on the Redwood Board of Education and was president for 15 years. He was a member of the Lutheran church; Lakeside Lodge, No. 328, I. O. O. F. Kirkland grange and the Independent Order of Forresters. He held officers in all of these organizations, being noble grand in the Odd Fellows and on the district installing staff. He recently received his 40 year membership button and at the time of his death was a trustee of the I. O. O. F.

Mr. and Mrs. Overacker celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary three years ago.

Both Mr. and Mrs. Overaker’s families were pioneers of the town of Alexandria. His grandfather the late William Overacker purchased the land from the “Macomb Purchase” in the section. His paternal grandmother, Margaret Zoller Overacker lived to be on of the centenarians of this section, reaching her 105th birthday before her death.
