Notes for Hiram LAKE


Near where his family settled in Winnebago County, Illinois, in 1842,
Hiram Lake gave land for a school house on a corner of his farm, which
was called the Canada School house. This Canada School house is south of
Rockton, Illinois. The school house was built of native stone, and so
well built, that while the building has been improved, it was still in
use in 1952. Members of the families of those early settlers gather for
picnics.
THE LAST WELL AND TESTAMENT OF HIRAM LAKE
The same being a correct copy of his will as written and signed by him
and is copied from the original will in the hand writing of Hiram Lake.
"Know all men by these presents, that I Hiram Lake of the Town of Owen
County of Winnebago and State of Illinois do make and ordain this my last
will and Testament in manner and form as follows to wit
That I give and bequeath to my wife Elizabeth Lake all of my household
goods and furniture, beds and bedding to have, and use as long bis she
shall live. When she has done with them they are to be divided between
Rachel A. Hulett and her children equally and Sarah A. Gleaseman and her
children, equally, and it is my desire that Rachel and Sarah divide them
without inter-ference of executor, and if my wife Elizabeth Lake should
die before I do, it is my desire that the household furniture should run
in the same channel as above directed when I have done with it.
"Second I do give and bequeath to Albert Hulett all my real and personal
estate of every description including corn in the fields, grain in the
stack and corn in the crib to have and to hold for Marston Hulett, until
he arrives at the age of twenty one in case he takes hold and helps to
labor on said property and lives until twenty one years of age, then said
property is to go to said Marston A. Hulett, and if he fails in these
obligations then to go to John Mortimor Hulett if he fails in the above
described obli-gation for Marston W. Hulett, and to go to him at twenty
one years of age, but if he should die or fail to fill the above
obligations before he is twenty one years of age then the property to go
to Albert Hulett for his own use and forever.
"It is my wish that Albert Hulett deed the west half of the north east
forty of the northwest fourth of Section twelve Town forty five. Range
one east to the one west. West thro the rest of the property fall to
I do make and appoint Albert Hulett sole Executor of this my last will
and Testament and it is my desire if can be that the Probate Court
require no bonds and Security for under the cir-cumstances I think it
will be unnecessary.
Fourth. It is my desire and is hereby made a condition of this will, if
this property falls to Marston W. Hulett or John Mortimore Hulett or
Albert Hulett as above described that they take care of my wife Elizabeth
as long as she lives.
Witness name and Seal at Owen this twelfth day of October in the year of
Our Lord, one Thousand Eight hundred and Seventy two.

This will filed Oct. 19, 1872. Proved Oct. 21, 1892.
Hiram Lake farmed most of his adult life in Winnebago County, Ill. He was
thrifty, prospered and became owner of much land in the county. Hiram
Lake was a ' Justice of the Peace in Owen Twp., Winnebago Co., M, in 1849.
