John VanVliet b. 1789 at Clinton, NY married Maria E. Beadle of Pleasant Valley, NY, 1818, and after her death, Widow Ann Thurston Overocker 1834; removed to Macedon 1836, three miles west of the village on the Rochester road, where he lived about twenty five years. In Dutchess County, a farmer; at Poughkeepsie, a merchant and Captain of the first steam freight barge on the Hudson. He was a soldier in the war of 1812; held first a Lieutneant’s commission from Governor Tompkins; afterwards promoted Captain, Major, Lieut. Colonel and Colonel, by Gov. DeWitt Clinton. Died at Elbridge, NY 1875.
