Elizabeth H. Smith
Smith, Elizabeth H. SELKIRK Elizabeth "Betty, Gram" Hotaling Smith passed away peacefully at home Monday evening, September 7, 2009. Born in Albany in 1919, Betty was 89. She was one of five children born to Lewis Eugene and Bertha (Seaburg) Hotaling. Betty attended school in New Baltimore, Selkirk and was a 1939 graduate of Coeymans High School where she loved sports. She played volleyball, badminton, softball and her favorite, basketball. After high school, she worked at Huyck's Mills in Rensselaer carding wool until 1941 when she married Arthur V. Smith. Together Betty and Art spent over 50 years self-employed running a gas station, landscaping business and typesetting. They raised three children, Wayne Arthur Smith (Susanne) of Feura Bush, Cora Elizabeth Burns of Ravena and Eileen Pearl Smith of Selkirk. Betty had nine grandchildren, Suzee Smith, Sheri Dawson, Edward Smith, Chad Smith, Robert Burns Jr., Connie Mortefolio, David Burns and Paul Stefanik. She also had 22 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. Betty was predeceased by her husband, Arthur V. Smith; son-in-law, Robert H. Burns; and grandson, Wayne Smith Jr. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Monday, September 14 at the Babcock Funeral Home, Ravena. Burial will follow in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, South Bethlehem. Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday 2 to 6 p.m.
