John was a soldier in the Civil War. He enlisted on Aug 12, 1862 age 26 at
Albany, NY. Private, Co. E, 7 HA Reg., NY

The New York 7th Heavy Artillery was orgainzed on Dec 19, 1862. There were 14
officers killed or mortally wounded, 4 officers died of disease or accident,
277 enlisted men killed or mortally wounded, and 374 enlisted men died of
disease or accident...

Records for John in the Civil war show that he was injured, captured, and sent to Andersonville. His mother received a pension for him based on his alleged death. Records uncovered show that he survived his injuries and in order to receive treatment at Andersonville, was forced to agree to enlist in the Confederate Army. There is no further information available from the time of his treatment and enlistment. One can only assume that even though he agreed to enlist in the Confederate Army, he never served. His name does not appear on any casualty lists for the Confederacy or the Union Army.
