ALBANY -- John N. Ernst, 93, died Tuesday, February 22, 2000, at his residence. Mr. Ernst was born and educated in Albany, son of the late Nicholas P. and Marie Frebel Ernst. He worked in construction as a carpenter with the Carpenter's Union Local #370, retiring in 1980. His finger and 'hammer' prints are on dozens of local landmarks, from the Governor's mansion and the Capital building downtown, to the Armory and Girls Academy uptown. He worked at Russell Sage and RPI in Troy, St. Marie's in Cohoes and the grain elevator at the Port. He was a fireman with the Albany Fire Department for a time in the late 1930's. Mr. Ernst was a member of the Lutheran Church of the Holy Spirit. Husband of Bertha McNary Ernst; father of Virginia Burns and her husband, Owen Burns, Jr. of Colonie, Eva Ford and her husband, Robert of E. Greenbush, Elizabeth Fink of Niskayuna, Frederick Fink and his wife, Barbara of Ravena and the late Robert Fink and Bertha Wendeborn; brother of Marie Overocker of Atlanta, GA and the late Alvina Houghtaling, Christina Johnson and Dorothy Telasky. Also survived by many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Funeral services, 11 a.m. Friday at the Lutheran Church of the Holy Spirit. Relatives and friends are invited and may also call at the Norman E. Dascher Funeral Home, 490 Delaware Ave., on Thursday from 4-8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations to either Community Hospice of Albany, 315 S. Manning Blvd., Albany 12208 or to the Lutheran Church of the Holy Spirit, 57 Hurlbut St., Albany, 12209, would be appreciated.
