Sumner Kittelle Moore, 81, a retired Navy commander who held executive positions in a trade group and a contracting business, died Sept. 4 of cancer at Martha Jefferson House, a retirement home in Charlottesville. He lived in Alexandria and Portsmouth, R.I.

Cmdr. Moore was born on the grounds of the U.S. Naval Academy, grew up in Washington and graduated from St. Albans School.

After graduating from the Naval Academy in 1948, he became a fifth-generation naval officer. His great-great-grandfather played a key role in founding the Naval Academy in 1845.

Cmdr. Moore's military duties included assignments as a submarine officer, a surface-ship officer, a professor of engineering at the Naval Academy and a staff officer of the Joint Chiefs of Staff at the Pentagon. He was also an instructor at the French naval academy.

He received the Meritorious Service Medal and retired from the Navy in 1972. He was his class's secretary and for 40 years wrote a monthly notes column about the Class of 1948 for Shipmate, the academy's alumni magazine.

In later years, he held administrative positions with the National Association of Securities Dealers and was a program manager with Thomas Enterprises, a real estate development company. He retired in the early 1990s.

Cmdr. Moore was a president of the St. Albans School Alumni Association and a member of the school's governing board. He was also a president of the Alexandria Symphony Orchestra and the Alexandria Association, a historical organization.

He was a member of St. Andrew & St. Margaret of Scotland Anglican Catholic Church in Alexandria and the International Order of St. Luke the Physician, a group promoting the connection of healing and faith.

He was a member of Army Navy Country Club, the Army and Navy Club and the New York Yacht Club. He was also a member of the Military Order of the Carabao, an organization of military officers stationed in the Philippines and other parts of Asia.

His wife of 57 years, Jane Pancoast Moore, died in June.

A son, Sumner Kittelle Moore Jr., died in 2005.

Survivors include three children, Ann Moore Milnor and John Pancoast Moore, both of Charlottesville, and Peter O'Bannon Moore of Great Falls; two brothers; and five grandchildren.
