SHOCKING CRIME
Murder in San Bernardino County, California-Human Life Held Cheap
San Bernardino, May 24th -The murder of Edward Sigsby yesterday afternoon at Agua Mansa, is the subject of general conversation. Sigsby was the stakeholder for a horse race, after the result of which a diffulty took place between Francisco Ortega and another person. The stakes only amounted to $15. Sigsby would not surrender the stakes until the disputants had settled the ownership. Ortega then peremptorily demanded the money. Sigsby refused to give it up. Ortega then drew his pistol and fired four shots at Sigsby, two taking effect-one passing through the left arm and the other entering the middle of the back, passing through the body. He died in a few minutes. Sigsby was not armed. When the Sheriff and his Deputy arrived at the scene from San Bernardino about two hours after, the murderers had disappeared. They were last seen working their way rapidly towards the border, Ortega leading the horse of his victim. Ortege is said to have killed a man at Riverside, about a year ago about a matter just as trifling a matter as that which caused yesterday’s tragedy. Every attempt to arrest him since was defeated by his native California friends, who always managed to keep him concealed from the authorities. Sigsby was a laborer, 36 years old, a Canadian by birth, and unmarried. Both of his murders were under the influence of liquor when he was killed. A short while ago another murder was committed in another part of the county in a dispute over thirty dollars, and the murderer is now in jail here awaiting trial.
