December 31, 1921 Agnes B Purdin, 30, and Howard W. Sigsby, 31, shot to death, and Sigsby mutilated with a hatchet, by Purdin’s ex-husband, Charles W. Purdin, 44, at Agnes Purdin’s home, 648 E. 47th. Purdin then unsuccessfully attempted to kill himself with gas in the kitchen. Purdin a veteran of the Spanish-American War and the Phillipines campaign, had returned unexpectedly from a veterans hospital in California. Purdin was convicted of manslaughter, sentenced to six years. December 13, 1924, Governor Pierce pardoned Purdin because he was likely to live only a few months

Portland Ore., Dec 31-Police today found the body of the divorced wife of Charles Wesley Purdin and the body of a man they believed to be H.W. Sigsby, shot to death in Mrs. Purdin’s home and found Purdin on the kitchen floor with a gas tube in his mouth. Purdin was taken to a hospital in a critical condition.
A note was found in the house indicating that Purdin had gone there to get his clothes and found the other man there. The note said: “They tried to kill me and so I did my best to protect myself and got wounded, but I think I was justified in doing what I did.”
