Newspaper Obituary of Nicholas Sigsbee (1816-1890). Newspaper unknown, but
probably local Otego, New York newspaper.

NICHOLAS SIGSBEE AT REST

Sunday morning, about 10 o'clock, the life of Nicholas Sigsbee went out and
his earthly career ceased. Since march last he had been confined in the
house with paralysis which had suddenly attacked him, apparently in the
prime of health, leaving him helpless and partly unconscious and
insensible, at times suffering untold pain. After weeks he rallied somewhat
and was occasionally wheeled about the streets in an invalid's chair by his
nurse, Lewis Ward, but it was known his end was not afar off.

Nicholas Sigsbee was born at West Davenport, Delaware county, in 1816 and
was therefore 74 years of age. He was the son of Nicholas Sigsbee, a much
respected farmer and one of the early settlers. Deceased moved to Albany
with his parents in 1832 and shortly after entered the editorial chair on
an Anti-rent paper, then published, and stimulated it with his push and
energy until it was a power in the political field. Having but few
advantages in his boyhood days to gain an education he took to books and
gained a practical education himself and battled life manfully, earnestly
and determinedly until he became a citizen of influence and power. It was
while in the editorial chair he became a pronounced democrat, which
principles he followed and advocated through life. The appointment of
jailor and deputy sheriff was also given him which office he filled during
the exciting times of the famous Gordan trial. He also served the D. & H.O.
Co. as agent to purchase timber for the road after the Albany and
Susquehanna was built, performing his duties with the utmost satisfaction.

Deceased was married twice, his first wife being Miss Agnes Orr, of
Davenport, by which union four children were born, two sons, Charles, a
commander in the United States navy at Annapolis, Md., and Luther Paul, of
Ayre, Mass., and two daughters, Mrs. H. B. Gregory, of Albany and Mrs.
Smith, Otego. After the death of his first wife he moved to Otego some
twenty years ago and again married, choosing for his second wife Mrs.
Scramling, widow of George Scramling, who also survives him.

He took up farming after moving to this town, which he conducted
successfully until some two years ago, when he bought a property in the
village and retired from the farm. As a citizen there was none better, he
possessing a kind a genial disposition which commended him to all and
established a feeling of regard and respect. None will be missed more than
Nicholas Sigsbee.

The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon, Rev. C.H. Hayes officiating,
assisted by Revs. Nash and Sanborne, and his remains were laid to rest in
Evergreen cemetery.
