My great grandfather was Charles Wesley McNary (wife: Catherine Tiers)
and his father was Daniel McNary (wife: Nancy Smith). They lived in
Broome County in the 1800's. I have a copy of Charles Wesley's Civil War
record. I have been looking for information on Daniel: when and where he
was born and who his parents were. A census index of New York State
(1810, also 1820) lists a Daniel McNary in Dutchess Co.in an area called
Fishkill. Also listed on the same census page are Martin McNary and
Martin A. These early census records do not give much information,
however, except the number of persons in the household and aproximate
ages - no names and no info on where they came from.
According to some of the oral and written history of our family, Daniel
and his wife lived next door to Charles Wesley and his family when my
grandfather was growing up (he was born 13 Nov.1856).
Charles's Civil War record says he was residing in or near Choconut
Center north of Johnson City in Broome Co. This record also says that
Charles and Catherine were married 25 Oct 1848 in Scotchtown, N.Y.,
which isn't far from Dutchess Co.
After his wife (Catherine Tiers) died, Charles W. came to Kansas and
lived with my grandparents. He is buried in the Sabetha Cemetery, Nemaha
County, Kansas.
Another note: My aunt kept a little notebook giving birth, marriage and
death dates of family members. The only info she had on Daniel was that
he married Nancy Smith (b 2 Jul 1790 - d 2 Mar 1880). The children
listed were Ike; Charles (b 17 Apr 1825 - d 13 Feb 1907); Daniel; and
Julia Ann (Jewell).
Children of Charles were: Elsie (1849-1865) John T. (b Aug 1851 - d 8
Feb 1904); Charles Wesley (Wes), my grandfather, (b 13 Nov 1856 - d 13
Nov 1939); Mary Helen (1861-1869); Merritt Owen (b 19 Apr 1858 - d 14
Dec 1932); Sara (Clark-Anderson) b 21 May 1866.
My grandfather and his brother, Merritt, came to Kansas as young men and
married women they met in Kansas.
