Notes for Martin MCNARY

A leter dated April 7, 1934 in reply to her inquiry about the Rev. War service of her ancestor, Martin McNary. The letter addressed to Miss Mary Francis of Hartford CT. states:
The data which follow were obtained from the papers on file in the above noted pension claim, based upon the Revolutionary War service of Martin McNary.
The date and place of birth of this soldier are not given in the claim, nor are the names of his parents shown.
Martin McNary enlisted in the state of Connecticut, in the spring of 1780, served as a private in Captain Stillwell's company, Colonels Durkee's and Gorsvenor's Connecticut regiment until March 26, 1783.
He was allowed pension on his application executed April 11, 1818, then aged sixty-one years and residing in Fishkill, Dutchess County, NY.
In 1820 the soldier, Martin McNary, referred to his wife as aged sixteen (?) years, and one child, aged four months, and to his mother aged ninety-one years, but he gave no names. There were other children, the only name definitely stated being, Martin McNary, who in 1823 had moved away from the residence of his father.
One Joseph C. McNary was referred to in 1823, his relationship was not given.
end of letter.

According to the transcript of his affidavit for the pension, he was stationed for the duration of his enlistment at the fort at West Point.

What is not stated in this letter is that Martin did not serve his entire enlistment. A Daniel Snider, stood in for him and completed his enlistment for him. I strongly suspect that Daniel Snider was a brother to Martin's first wife, Catherine, whose parents I haven't been able to learn.

His step-mother was not 91 years old at the time of his filing, she was only about 68. She may have gone there to assist him.

There were only 6 children in Martin's household in 1800, 4 sons and 2 daughters. Daniel and Martin were likely no longer in the household in 1800, but they are not listed as heads of any household.

The date of death listed on the Revolutionay War Pensions is Aug 8, 1825, and states that the soldier was aged about 61 in 1818 at the time of his application. Also stated in the application was the fact that he had a wife and a child aged four months in 1820, and his mother, aged 91 that lived with the soldier.
"Martin McNary resident in said county aged sixty six years, seven months on June 18, 1823."
